Small Bathroom Layout: 4x7 Wet and Dry Zones That Work

How to zone a 4x7 ft bath into wet and dry areas: door swing, WC clearance, shower size, and glass rules that stop splashes.

A 4x7 ft bath (28 sq ft) fails when everything gets wet: toilet paper damp, vanity swells, floor slippery. The fix is strict wet-dry zoning tested in a Hay Riad 4x7 ft bath in Meknes.

The 4x7 zone map that works

Divide lengthwise: first 3.5 ft from door = dry (vanity + WC), far 3.5 ft = wet (shower). Width 4 ft fits 30-inch shower depth + 18-inch walkway minimum.

Meknes case: door on 4-ft wall, left side 30-inch wall-hung vanity, right side WC with 24-inch center clearance, far end 30x48 inch shower with fixed glass. Before: curtain + pedestal, floor always wet. After: dry zone stays dry with one 30-second squeegee.

Measurements that matter:

Door: 24-inch sliding or outward-opening. Inward swing eats 9 sq ft — never use it in 4x7.
WC: 15 inch side clearance from center to wall, 21 inch front clearance to shower glass.
Shower: 30-inch minimum width, 48-inch length for elbow room. Below 30x30, use wet-room style, not cubicle.
Glass: 8mm toughened fixed panel 24-30 inch wide + 12-inch gap for entry. Full door enclosure traps steam in small baths.

Door swing is half the layout

Pocket slider costs MAD 680-1,020 installed and gains a full vanity width. If landlord forbids cutting, use outward-opening hinge + magnetic stop. Bi-fold PVC door is third choice — cheaper but leaks sound.

Keep switch outside bath, not behind door. In one test flat the switch was 6 inch behind inward door — unreachable. Move to corridor side during remodel, cost MAD 85 per point.

WC + bidet fit without crowding

Wall-hung WC saves 6-8 inch projection versus floor-standing — worth MAD 2,100 extra in 4x7. If budget is tight, keep floor-standing but choose compact 24-inch projection model, not 28-inch comfort model.

Hand spray (shattaf) needs 12-inch side clearance + hook at 36-inch height. Do not place spray opposite vanity — hose drips across walkway. Place on WC side wall, with floor drain below drip line.

Shower drain and slope: the invisible layout

One central floor drain is not enough for zoned baths. Use two drains: shower drain + dry-zone floor trap near door. Slope shower 1:50 to its drain, dry zone 1:80 to its trap. Flat floors pool and seep under vanity legs — the top cause of swelling we saw.

Glass gap 12 inch at shower entry lets mop reach both zones. Full floor-to-ceiling glass looks premium but blocks exhaust airflow — keep 8-inch gap at top for steam escape in windowless baths.

Cleaning routine that keeps zones working

Squeegee shower glass + push water to shower drain after each use (30 seconds). Mop dry zone weekly, not daily — overwashing dry zone drives water into vanity. Keep bath mat only in dry zone, washable cotton, never rubber-backed on tile (traps moisture).

Exhaust 8-inch 150 CFM wired to light + 10-min timer. Without it, even zoned baths grow black silicone in one rainy season.

FAQ

Can I fit a washing machine in 4x7? Only if shower becomes 30x30 wet shower + machine in dry zone on 4-inch plinth with cover. Better: machine in kitchen or balcony — humidity kills boards in 2 years.

Sliding door or curtain for shower? Fixed glass panel, no door. Curtains stick to skin and mold; hinged doors need 24-inch swing you do not have.

Visual size trick: tile + mirror + light in zoned baths

Zoning works best when dry zone looks larger. Use 12x24 light tiles laid horizontal in dry zone and vertical in shower — same tile, different lay, zones read distinct without a curb. Matching grout (light grey) removes grid chop; one dark accent strip only at mirror wall, not both zones or bath feels cut in half.

Mirror 24x28 inch over vanity + 4000K side strip doubles perceived depth. In the Hay Riad bath, adding mirror cabinet and side LED after rezoning made the 28 sq ft bath feel like 36 sq ft to visitors — same floor, light trick. Keep ceiling same warm white as walls, not contrasting color that lowers height.

Door color same as dry-zone wall (off-white satin) so entry disappears. Dark door in 4-ft wall chops the view on entry. Handle lever, not knob, for wet hands — MAD 170 difference, daily ease.
