Bathroom Fittings Guide: Taps, Mixers and Water Pressure
Choose taps, mixers, showers and angle valves for low-pressure flats: brass vs SS, diverter types, and pressure fixes under MAD 500.
A MAD 850 mixer that screams in low pressure ruins a MAD 40k bath. In a Marjane 3rd-floor flat with 0.8 bar pressure, we swapped high-rise rain shower for 4-inch head + pressure pump — flow tripled for MAD 480. This is fittings-only; layout is in small bathroom layout.
Brass vs SS vs zinc: buy once
Body: solid brass (500g+ weight) or SS304. Zinc alloy (light, chrome peels in 12 months with hard water) — reject even if MAD 200 cheaper. Test: scratch hidden base — yellow = brass, silver non-magnetic = SS, dull grey magnetic = zinc.
Cartridge: 35mm ceramic disc, brand-boxed. Cheap cartridges drip in 8 months; replacement MAD 60 + plumber MAD 150. Ask for spare cartridge free at purchase — good shops include it.
Finish: chrome for hard water (wipes clean), matte black only with soft water + weekly citric wipe, else white scale shows daily.
Mixer types for flats
Basin: single-lever tall 12-inch for counter basins, standard 6-inch for undermount. Wall-mounted saves counter but needs in-wall body — only during retiling.
Shower diverter: 2-in-1 (spout + shower) for tub baths, 3-way (rain + hand + spout) only with 1.5+ bar. Low-pressure flats: skip rain 10-inch head (needs 2 bar), use 4-inch head + hand shower on rail — feels 2x stronger at 0.8 bar.
Angle valves: quarter-turn brass with filter, MAD 35-60 each. Add one per tap + WC. Lets you isolate leak without cutting building water — pays back first midnight leak.
Low-pressure fixes under MAD 500
Diagnose first: remove aerator, check flow. If strong without aerator, clean aerator (vinegar overnight) — free fix 40% of cases.

- 1/2 HP automatic pressure pump: MAD 420-680, lifts 0.6 to 1.8 bar for one bath

Do not buy thermostatic mixer under 1 bar — it hunts hot-cold and scalds. Use manual mixer + geyser set to 50C.

- Shower head: 78-80 inch from floor, 12 inch from wall for rain, rail slider 48-72 inch adjustable
- Hand spray holder: 36 inch beside WC, hose 48 inch anti-twist
- Spout: 8 inch above tub rim, 6 inch projection past tub edge
In one flat the mixer was 4 inch off-center — water hit basin edge and splashed floor daily. Cardboard template test before drilling saves this: cut basin outline, mark tap hole, test reach.

Maintenance that doubles life
Monthly: aerator rinse, shower head citric soak 30 min. Quarterly: flexible hose check (bulge = replace MAD 40 before burst), silicone at mixer base. Yearly: cartridge grease, tank clean. Hard water + no maintenance = chrome pitted in 2 years.

Why does hot water take 2 minutes? Long 40-ft run from solar. Add recirculation loop (MAD 900) or 10L instant under basin (MAD 750) — saves 15L daily waste.
Can I mix brands? Yes for taps + showers, no for in-wall diverter + trim — same brand or trim will not fit body.
Buy-day checklist for Moroccan shops
Shops push zinc mixers as brass — carry a magnet and scale. In Derb Omar we tested 6 mixers: 2 claimed brass stuck to magnet (zinc), 1 SS304 did not. Ask: body material in writing, cartridge size (35mm ceramic), warranty years with bill, spare cartridge included, and pressure rating (0.5-5 bar for flats).
Check lumen equivalent for LED mirrors: 12W 4000K 1000lm minimum or face looks dim. Wave phone camera under mirror light — flicker lines mean poor driver, reject. Keep one spare aerator + flexible hose (MAD 65) same trip — future single purchase costs MAD 150 taxi + time.
Photo model numbers + boxes before plumber leaves. In Morocco, box swap (branded box, local body) is common — installed weight check (brass 500g+) plus bill photo protects warranty. Good shops welcome this; pushy shops that refuse, leave.
