Bathroom Mirror Lighting: Sconces, IP Zones and No Shadows

Eye-level sconces plus LED mirrors at 4000K CRI90: IP44/IP65 zones, shaver sockets and anti-fog placement for 4x7 baths.

Overhead-only bath light casts zombie shadows for shaving. In a 4x7 Sbata bath, swapping top tube for 2x side sconces + LED mirror cut shadows to zero for MAD 620. Layout is in small bathroom layout, vanity sizes in bathroom vanity sizes.

Eye-level rule: why sides beat top

Face needs 300 lux vertical at eye level, both sides. Top 4000K panel gives 500 lux floor but 80 lux face with brow shadows. Fix: 2x vertical 5W 4000K CRI90 battens flanking 30-inch mirror at 62-inch center height, 8 inch off mirror edge. Or LED mirror 24x28 inch 12W with front + back glow.

CRI90 mandatory — CRI70 mutes reds, makeup and shave nicks misjudged. Test: red towel looks orange under CRI70, true red under CRI90.

IP zones: what can go where

Zone 0 inside shower/bath: IP67 only, 12V. Zone 1 above shower to 7.5 ft: IP65. Zone 2 2-ft around shower/sink: IP44 minimum. Outside zones: IP20 ok. In 4x7, mirror 2 ft from shower = Zone 2, need IP44 sconce, not bedroom batten.

Sconce 6 ft from shower head + shaver socket inside mirror cabinet (IP20 inside is fine, door closes steam). All bath lights on RCD 30mA — non-negotiable, test quarterly.

Mirror size + light pairing

Mirror width = vanity width (30-inch vanity = 30-inch mirror). Round 18-inch leaves splash wall dark — avoid in family baths. Mirror cabinet 6-inch deep with side LEDs stores meds + lights face; open shelf beside holds daily soap out of steam.

Backlit mirror alone (glow halo) looks premium but gives 120 lux face — pair with 1 side batten if you shave daily. Front-lit opal mirror gives 300 lux direct — better for small baths.

Anti-fog and hard-water care

Defogger pad behind mirror (MAD 250, 20W, 5-min clear) beats wiping that scratches coating. Nano-coat glass MAD 170 extra + weekly citric spray — Meknes hard water scales glass in 2 weeks without squeegee. Squeegee mirror + glass 20 sec after shower prevents 80% scaling.

Ventilation backup: 150 CFM fan + 10-min timer (see bathroom ventilation mold control). Light without exhaust still molds silicone in one season.

FAQ

4000K or 3000K for bath mirror? 4000K CRI90 for shave/makeup accuracy, 3000K accent cove for evening soak separate. Single 6500K blue makes skin patchy on video calls.

Why does LED mirror flicker on camera? Poor driver. Phone wave test in shop — lines mean reject. Branded driver + aluminium channel, no flicker + warm skin = buy.

Shave and makeup test: prove it in one morning

Test new lights with routine, not showroom stare. Sbata owner shaves + partner does makeup — old top tube scored 2/10 (brow shadows, missed spots).
